I am one of those types of people constantly trying new things, whether it be learning the guitar, some sport or modifying my eating habits (intermittent fasting, low carb, high protein anyone!). Nothing unusual in that, I like to think most of us try something new from time to time. I do have a quirk though!
Rather than seeing someone for help straight away (ie guitar lessons, personal trainer etc), I want to get reasonably good at said activity before I seek a teacher. That could involve me doing umpteen things to try and prepare such as:
- Watching various guitar lessons on Youtube and practicing
- Getting out there and running/training
Why on earth would I do this? Short answer…Embarrassment.
I feel embarrassed if I can not do something. I consider myself to be relatively intelligent and I apply myself to whatever it is I am doing. Therefore, for me to not to be able to do something feels somewhat like I am failing. Ridiculous I know, but there it is. I am working on it.
Why on earth am I telling you this?
When it comes to finances, people can sometimes feel embarrassed about their situation. They feel like they should be in a better position than where they are, or they should have more control than they do.
You’re an intelligent person, work hard, potentially earning good income and therefore believe you should be on top of all this. The reality is though we’re all different and everyone of us has had a different journey to get to where we are. I have been in financial planning for over 20 years and have seen every situation you can dream of. Some people have been lucky, and unfortunately some have been unlucky.
All you can do is take stock of where you are today, focus on where you want to be and how to get there. Whether this means you need some help or not is up to you.
